By Lee Dobbins Perennials are a favorite type of garden plant for many gardens as they will bloom for several seasons without replanting. Perhaps one of the best qualities of perennials is that you can divide them and make more plants for free! Dividing your perennials periodically is important as it will keep them from getting overcrowded and help insure healthy lush plants. Many perennials can be divided easily, but this does not hold try for every variety. In general, division is easiest with perennials that grow in clumps or ones with an expanding root mass. Perennials which stem from single taproot typically cannot be divided but can be duplicated by using root cuttings or seeds. It is important to divide the plant at a time when the plant is most likely to be receptive to this procedure. Fr plants that come up in spring and summer, the best time to divide them is in the fall Perennials that bloom in the fall or late summer should be divided in the spring. You can divide perennials with a minimum of preparation. If you will be replanting the divisions, you should have already decided on the new area and prepared the soil to accept the new plants. If you are dividing to give the plants to a family member or friend, have an appropriate receptacle handy to put the division in. Loosen the soil, gently, around the plant clump that you plan to divide. You can use a spading fork to scrape up the dirt and be sure not to damage any parts of the plant. The clump should then be sliced with a garden trowel and divided into four parts. Make sure your trowel is sharp so you get a clean cut, otherwise your plants could become damaged. Break up the four sections by hand into four inche by four inche sections. Plant the small sections immediately. When you are dividing plants, make sure you thoroughly wet the soil a couple of days before you do the division. This will make it easier to dig up the clump for division. Also, you should add compost or some other organic material to the soil both around the original plant and in the soil where the new divisions will be planted. This will give the plants the nutrition they need and help them to grow strong in their new area of the garden. Once the new plants are in place, make sure you water thoroughly and fertilize appropriately. My answer was, Yes, but thats just the starting point and I feel that using rule of thumb for business decisions, especially pricing decisions, means you havent created a business strategy. Pricing can be based upon so many variables that using an industry average, standardized mark-up, or astrological chart is the tip of the iceberg in setting prices. A key consideration, and one that is rarely discussed, is the overall strategy of the seller. What position in the marketplace do they have (or want to have)? Some businesses create a prestige, high service position while others create a bargain, low service position. They can both be selling exactly the same product, but their overhead structure, cost of occupancy, cost of amenities, cost of labor, cost of advertising, and cost of customer communications is vastly different and therefore the price they sell their product must be at opposite ends of the pricing spectrum. If both the prestige outlet and the bargain outlet meet their sales volume and profit goals one can conclude that their pricing structure is valid and their customers feel they are getting full value even though their prices might both be considerably different from industry standards or rule of thumb. So think of rule of thumb as just the starting point of the pricing equation question. Once you have discovered the range of average prices for your industry you can begin to develop the added value you bring to that product and modify the price based on your individual situation. If you offer prestige, plush amenities, individualized service, expensive location, extra training, etc. you will have to charge for it. If the buyer wants those added virtues they will pay for it. If you offer a bargain experience your overhead must be much lower or you must sell in higher volume to cover your expenses and still make a profit. Apollo, the Greek Deity, was a name used for space missions for a very obvious reason. There were deities for important parts of life, such as war, and also for more mundane areas, such as cleaning and weaving. Apollo the Greek deity was seen differently in later times, and as Roman deity of the same name. The Classical version of Apollo was the deity of the sun, taking the place of Helios. Apollo was also a patron of Delphi, which made him an oracle and able to tell the future and speak to mortals. He also became the deity that oversaw colonists, and was the patron defender of herds and flocks. Apollo’s many different aspects were worshiped alternately in different areas of Greece. The sun of the deity Zeus and mythical figure Leto, his twin sister was Artemis, deity of hunting and later the deity of the moon (a position usurped from Selene). His position diving prophecy at Delphi made Apollo one of the most important deity figures of Olympus. The cults (sects) that followed Apollo the Greek deity were quite distinct, unusual, because he had two areas that were devoted to him Delos and Delphi. Often, shrines of each cult would be found in the same city. The most common symbols associated with Apollo were the lyre and the bow, along with occasional depictions of a plectrum and the sacrificial tripod, representing his powers of prophecy. The Pythean Games were held at Delphi every four years in honor of Apollo, with the laurel bay plant being used as the basis of crowns given to winners at his game. This was not the only plant sacred to Apollo, palms were often used in ceremonies regarding this deity because he was born under one in Delos. Apollo was one of the most influential and powerful deities in the Greek pantheon. With two sites, Delos and Delphi, devoted to worshiping him, Apollo had many followers. He also governed many aspects of Greek life, so received more donations and tributes than many of his fellow deities. Today, Apollo is still revered by followers of revivalist Hellenic polytheism.
