Salary Negotiation: Compensation Advice From A Recruiter

By Carl Mueller As a recruiter, I’m used to negotiating salary and compensation on behalf of my job candidates with the hiring manager of the company they are interviewing with. Salary and compensation negotiation is one of the things a recruiter typically does when helping someone get a job so if you’re not a good negotiator this can be one of the things they can help you with if you decide to use a recruiter. Here are some tips that I’ve learned in my time as a recruiter that might help you next time you’re negotiating salary for yourself with a potential new employer. 1. Let the employer bring up the issue of money first. Ideally, you should let the interviewer broach the issue of money (ie. “How much money are you looking for?̶ ;) not you. Employers generally dont want money-motivated staff whose main concern is salary since people can easily switch jobs if they can get more money elsewhere. Certainly, if you’re working with a recruiter you can let them know what salary you’re looking for since they need to know what range is acceptable to you and avoid wasting your time with jobs that don’t match your requirements. 2. Don’t state a desired salary range. The problem with saying “I’m looking for a salary of $30,000-$40,000″ is that while you might be thinking that you’re showing flexibility by stating a wide range, you could actually be low balling the salary you end up getting offered. While you might be thinking that you’d like the higher end of this salary range (ie. $38,000) the hiring manager might be thinking you’d be happy with $30,000 since you did state that $30,000 was in your acceptable range! While the hiring manager hopefully wants to be fair, some might not offer you $40,000 if you state that $30,000 would be acceptable, which is basically what you’re saying with this stated range. Ideally you want to go into an interview knowing the salary range that the company is offering. A recruiter can definitely get this information for you. Knowing the salary range being offered ensures that you don’t price yourself out of range and dont lowball yourself either. 3. Don’t state a salary that you won’t be happy accepting. If you tell a hiring manager you’d be happy with $30,000 do not expect to be able to go back to them later in the interview process and then ask for $35,000. It can be difficult to get a higher salary agreed to once you’ve verbally mentioned a lower one. As we spoke about in Point 1, let the employer bring up the issue of money first and try your best to understand the job fully before committing to a stated salary figure. While you don’t want to evade the question if you’re asked “how much money are you looking for” during a job interview, you also don’t want to ruin your chances at getting a better figure by making a mistake handling the salary question. The longer you can delay the issue of money in an interview process the better. A good recruiter should be able to help you with salary negotiation since that’s part of their job and since as the middleman, they can negotiate on your behalf without the emotional aspect that can come along with this issue if you were doing it yourself. Beating the Summer Whine of Hungry Teenagers without Busting Your Budget

By Joanne Robbins It’s summer time and the living is easy or so they say. Maybe that’s somebody’s point-of-view, but at my house the whining begins the first full day of summer vacation. After working all day the first thing I would hear when arriving home is, “there’s nothing in this house to eat” the second is, “we’re bored!” Initially I was more than a little upset. What could they mean there is nothing to eat? I’d just spent half my paycheck laying in enough supplies to last a lifetime or at least a week. Recovering from this shock my kids and I had some conversation. What I learned was: 1. When they are bored all there is to do is open the refrigerator. I’ve seen this in action and if there’s more than one kid in the house it is comical to watch. 2. When they are actually hungry because it’s mealtime they want to find something to eat that doesn’t require any work on their part. Ha! 3. Just because one of them started a new diet which includes only whole grains and fresh fruit that doesn’t mean the other would even touch the stuff. I should’ve bought junk food. 4. The other kid decided not to stay on the diet but forgot to mention it in the grocery so .. the whole grains are being ignored and fresh fruit is growing fuzz in the bottom drawer of the ‘fridge. So rethink your strategy when shopping for their daytime food and I know it sounds frightening, but try to think like a teenager. 1. Canned food is a lifesaver and quickly cuts the whining. Hopefully my kids have the strength and know-how to use a can opener even though ours is the old-fashioned, crank-it-yourself kind. 2. Microwave dinners offer a larger variety but I gulp when I see the price. The portion size does not seem to justify the cost. To get past the microwave meal sticker shock I found a cookbook for kids with recipes geared toward using the microwave. This neat book is simple to use and the ingredients list won’t break your budget, but the best part is that it gets kids involved with making their own meals. It takes a little time which they have plenty of and entertains for awhile. 3. Plan for leftovers. When you shop and when you fix supper plan ahead for several days or longer if you have a freezer. If you cook half-again what you would normally fix for supper that could translate into lunch a couple of days later. In my house popular leftovers include: meatloaf, alfredo, pot roast and goulash. There are terrific containers with sections like a tv dinner. They go from freezer or ‘fridge to the microwave in a snap. 4. Finger or snack food doesn’t have to mean junk food. Even picky teenagers will dive into the refrigerator for a plastic bag of vegetables but only if the veggies are already washed, cut to length and accompanied by the dip of their choice. There are many other ways the kids can fill their time during summer break. All it takes is some research and planning. Although the kids might not agree, vacation from school doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t learn something. The idea is to create fun and excitement while “learning” sneaks in the back door! The Truth About Geraniums

By Jody Taberner A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. But would there be confusion on what plant you are talking about? There is with Geraniums. Does the idea of a Geranium conjure up an image of a quaint Greek fishing village with window boxes planted out with pillar box red flowers? Guess what, they aren’t really Geraniums. They are Pelargonium zonale hybrids. Ok, so most people know them as Geraniums, and they are both in the family Geraniaceae , I will give you that. But it is probably going to be a long time before we can get everyone in the gardening community to understand that Geraniums are a distinct genus from Zonale Pelargoniums. Even Linnaeus (who invented the plant classification system that we use) put Pelargonium spp. and Geranium spp. together in the same genus originally, along with another genus Erodium spp. It wasn’t until 1789 that the classification of these distinct genuses was changed in an article published in a Horticultural Journal by William Aiton. True Geraniums ( Geranium spp.) , are probably best known commonly as Cranesbills. They can look similar to many of the scented leafed Pelargoniums. The biggest difference is that True Geraniums tend to be herbaceous, with finer stems, rather than having rigid stems like a small shrub and most of the Pelargoniums. There are hundreds of species of True Geraniums found natively in many parts of the world. Europe is the home to the Dusky Cranesbill (Geranium phaeum) , that is also known as the Mourning Widow due to its maroon-black flowers. It grows to around 1m x 1m. It is a most unusual flower colour to add to the garden. Australia has the Geranium retrorsum , the Grassland Cranesbill. A low, scrambling plant that can grow to 1m across. It has dainty little pink flowers. It is not commonly found in cultivation, but can be found in the wild across Victoria , NSW and South Australia . Asia and Europe share the Meadow Cranesbill (Geranium pratense) . Which as the name suggests is found in open, sunny positions. These flowers are a pale, bluish-mauve. The next time you go to your local nursery and see a plant labelled Geranium, just have a second look to see what it really is, and smile to yourself wisely that you know what it really is. Thread Count in Quilting Fabric - What’s the Big Deal

By Penny Halgren Thread count is the number of threads per square inch in the fabric. It determines the quality and weight of the fabric. Threads are counted for both the length and width of the fabric. If there are the same number of threads in both directions, the fabric is an even weave. Fabrics with an even weave are easier to work with as you make a quilt, since the fabric will have the same amount of give in both directions. Quilting cotton is generally 68 x 68 threads per square inch, higher than average fabrics. Fabrics with lower thread counts, those around 60 x 60 per square inch are too lightweight for quilts. They tend to ravel excessively, they will shrink more, they will be less durable, and batting will come through the weave in your finished quilt. High thread counts and extremely tight weaves can be difficult to work with, especially if you are hand quilting. Although it is tempting to use a sheet for the backing of a quilt, the finish and thread count may make it very difficult to work with. I remember one year I was very excited to find some high quality Pima cotton. I bought a bunch of it, in all different colors, and made a beautiful quilt. It was an Amish-type Ocean Waves. Cutting the fabric was a dream. These were the days before rotary cutting, and I was cutting the fabric with scissors. Sewing the fabric on the machine was wonderful. Basting it was great. Then came the quilting. Hand quilting was not pleasant at all. The thread count was so high, that quilting was almost a nightmare. I tried everything smaller needles, sharper needles, bigger thimble, whatever I could dream up. But nothing made any difference. I just gutted it out, and finished it, because I loved the feel of the fabric and the design of the quilt. I love the quilt, but wont ever use Pima cotton again. Happy Quilting! This article examines only the most difficult barriers in each category. Let’s remove the barriers to healthy diets…but first, “What is a Healthy Diet?”
What is a Healthy Diet?
A healthy diet provides the recommended daily allowance for vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Any diet that fails to meet the minimum daily allowance for any nutrient is unhealthy. Of course, providing the daily allowance for all nutrients is next to impossible given the poor nutritional value of today’s diets.
We eat on average 1.5 meals a day (not even close to the suggested 5-6 meals). The one meal we manage to eat is usually late in the evening, high in calories, high in fat, and is missing Group I Foods (fresh vegetables and fruit).
The majority of young men between the ages of 20-25 eat only 2 servings of fruit and 1 serving of fresh vegetables throughout the week! The next generation is nutritionally starved.
A healthy diet is quite simple and easy to follow. Here are the steps to eating a healthy diet: Eat 5-6 meals a day.
Every meal should have a serving of lean protein, complex carbohydrate, and unlimited amounts of Group I Foods.
Eat approximately 40-50% protein, 30-40% complex carbohydrates, and 30% fat everyday. Limit sugars, saturated fats, and trans-fatty-acids.
Maintain a slightly negative energy balance or perfectly balance it. How do you accomplish this? Read the next few steps!
Calculate your energy output everyday. Energy output is the Resting Metabolic Rate plus the number of calories burned through physical activity.
Subtract your energy output from your energy input — the number of calories you eat a day. The result is the remaining total energy and it determines your energy balance.
If the result is a positive number, you have a Positive Energy Balance. Simply, cut back on the amount you eat.
If the result is negative, you have a Negative Energy Balance. Increase the amount you eat.
Make adjustments to energy input (the number of calories you eat a day) so that you’ll remain with a slightly negative energy balance.
Some weight loss experts advocate a strong negative energy balance at baseline. In theory, this makes sense but in practice it’s associated with weight regain.
I believe that energy should be balanced or slightly negative at baseline. The closer to a balanced energy state, the better the chance for avoiding weight regain and maintaining your ideal weight for a longer period of time.
Do not cut back, slow down, or stop exercising. If adjustments need to be made, it’s better to make dietary changes than to make changes to your exercise plan.A healthy diet is simple to follow. Eat fewer calories, exercise, and make dietary adjustments as needed. No pills, supplements, acupuncture, magnets, or magic minerals are needed. Just a calculator.

Two difficult external barriers are peer pressure and time. Our friends and family influence our lives more than we like to admit. They affect our decisions, choices, moods, behavior, and weight.
During medical school, I worked in a weight loss clinic to make some money. I will never forget the level of influence a spouse or friend could have on a patient. Several times, I saw first hand someone, other than the patient, make the dieting decisions.
At this level of influence, our peer groups can make a big impact on eating a healthy diet. Just keep this influence thing in mind. OR, should I say, “Keep it in mind only if you have TIME.”
Time is another rarely acknowledged external barrier to healthy diets. We live in world that seems to lose time. The normal 24 hour day feels more like 15 hours. All we do is rush from one event or appointment to the next. Eating a healthy diet is next to impossible.
Please, slow down. Who knows, by slowing down we might actually pay attention to the important things in our lives. I find that the more I rush the less I get done. And what I do finish, really isn’t all that important.
Be serious about eating a healthy diet and slow down.
Removing Dieting Barriers to Healthy Diets
About two to three decades ago, while watching repeats on TV, Americans changed their diets and started eating lots of fat and processed foods. We have suffered ever since.
Eating lots of fat created a macronutrient imbalance and has clogged our arteries. Then we fell in love with processed foods. This love affair drained all of the vitamins and minerals from our bodies and resulted in a micronutrient deficiency.
Until we restore things to the pre-TV Dinner diet, we will continue to suffer heart attacks and weight gain.
It’s really crazy…we stuff ourselves with heavy fat and then starve for vitamins and minerals.

Physically, our lack of exercise is the greatest barrier to healthy diets. Start exercising! Walk. Jog. Swim. Lift weights. Sweat. Move. Breath. Live.
